Four Russian soldiers killed in Syria by militants: ministry

Syrian Human Rights Observatory says the killed Russians were 9, along with 26 soldiers from the pro-government forces, the BNR reported. In the province of Deir ez-Zor fighters "Wagner" on a regular basis are the guardians of the "Assad oil rigs", the source said the Russian press.

A firefight pitting Syrian government troops and their Russian military advisers against Islamic State militants has left at least four Russians dead and several wounded, the defence ministry in Moscow said on Sunday.

Russia's authorities formally acknowledges that 92 troopers have been killed in Syria, though some estimate the quantity is even larger.

Russian military and Syrian troops responded to the attack and reportedly killed 43 'terrorists, ' destroying six of their vehicles, Moscow said.

"It killed 35 fighters of Pro-government forces, including at least nine Russians".

"During the fighting, which lasted for almost an hour, the military destroyed 43 terrorists and six all-terrain vehicles with large-caliber armaments installed on them", the ministry added.

The remaining 26 have been all Syrian forces, he advised AFP.

Despite various statements by Putin's government suggesting that the Russian military had completed its role in the area, it has become an essential pillar for the government of President Bashar al-Assad of Syria.

It confirmed Russian military advisers were present during Wednesday's attack and were among those killed.

More than 350,000 people have been killed and millions displaced since the civil war began in 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-government protests.

Terrorists attacked Syrian and Russian troops, and the latter was forced to respond, according to the MoD.

The Russian military is backing Syria's army with air strikes and troops, but there are also widespread reports of private Russian mercenaries on the ground.
