Cambridge Analytica closes down amidst Facebook data use scandals

Cambridge Analytica closes down amidst Facebook data use scandals

Cambridge has denied wrongdoing.

He has said it was a mistake to rely on Cambridge Analytica to delete tens of millions of Facebook users' data and apologised for the "major breach of trust".

In a statement Wednesday, Cambridge Analytica insists it has done nothing wrong and has been "vilified" in the media.

Stein added that his office will continue to investigate Facebook's policies.

North Carolina's Democratic Party has filed a formal complaint over work performed by Cambridge Analytica for the campaign of Republican U.S. Sen.

His comments will keep the pressure on bosses including Alexander Nix, former chief executive of Cambridge Analytica, whose answers to parliament Mr Collins considers unsatisfactory. "As a result, it has been determined that it is no longer viable to continue operating the business, which left Cambridge Analytica with no realistic alternative to placing the Company into administration".

Cambridge Analytica and its parent company, SCL Group, became the centre of a scandal in March, when whistle-blower Christopher Wylie revealed Cambridge Analytica acquired millions of Facebook users' personal information to build software that could target potential swing voters in political campaigns, including US President Donald Trump's 2016 election bid.

Commenting on the closure, the company said in a statement: "While this decision was extremely painful for Cambridge Analytica's leaders, they recognize that it is all the more hard for the company's dedicated employees who learned today that they likely would be losing their jobs as a result of the damage caused to the business by the unfairly negative media coverage". It sought information on Facebook to build psychological profiles on a large portion of the United States electorate, media reports said.

Revelations about the misuse of data, plunged Facebook into crisis and prompted regulators to open investigations.

The company was able to amass the database quickly with the help of an app that appeared to be a personality test.

"Social media users don't expect to have their information given to third party developers without their knowledge", Attorney General Josh Shapiro said in a statement Thursday.

The report of an independent investigation released by Cambridge Analytica said that it was involved in several elections in India since 2010, but refuted allegations that it interfered in the poll process.

The ousted Cambridge Analytica's CEO, Alexander Nix was listed as a director of Emerdata in February, until the firm made a decision to severe ties with him in March. Other Emerdata directors include people associated with Cambridge Analytica.
