Afghanistan: Kabul attacks kill at least seven, over 15 injured

Three explosions rang out in Kabul on Wednesday, in the latest militant attacks on the Afghan capital.

According to the New York Times, the attacks came a day after two rural northern districts fell to the Taliban, expanding the militant group's control over territory in Afghanistan.

The first blast occurred in Dasht-e-Barchi area in Kabul's PD13 which was followed by gunfire.

The second attack took place in central Kabul outside the police precinct 10 in Shar-e-Naw, and two attackers trying to enter the police compound were shot dead.

The Islamic State extremist group claimed responsibility for the first attack and the Taliban said it was behind the second assault.

After hours of fighting, six people including two police personnel and two attackers were killed and nine others sustained injuries.

However, the Afghan Intelligence - National Directorate of Security - said that the notorious Haqqani terrorist network was involved in the coordinated attacks.

IS claimed responsibility for the raid on a police station in a heavily Shiite-populated neighbourhood in the city's west.

The Taliban and Daesh frequently target Afghanistan's Western-backed government and security forces.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said Monday that children made up most of the 107 casualties in the airstrike that Afghan authorities said had targeted senior Taliban commanders planning attacks. "Two policemen also lost their lives and two policemen are wounded", Estanakzai said.

Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanekzai confirmed an explosion near one police station on Wednesday and said a gunbattle was underway there.

The Taliban outfit launched its so-called annual spring offensive on April 25 and since then fierce fighting has erupted in parts of the country.

On April 22, a suicide bomber detonated himself outside a voter registration centre in the city, killing 60 people and wounding more than 100.
