Sen. Chuck Schumer Is Introducing a Bill to Decriminalize Marijuana Nationwide

The Senate's top Democrat announced Friday that he is introducing legislation to decriminalise marijuana, the first time that a leader of either party in Congress has endorsed a rollback of some of the country's oldest drug laws.

"The time has come to decriminalize marijuana", Leader Schumer said in a press release.

Schumer's announcement comes as the Trump administration's made moves this year to allow for more federal oversight on legal marijuana.

Schumer also noted that the bill would ensure that marijuana advertisement would not target kids by enforcing the same advertising guidelines for cannabis as other controlled substances, like alcohol and tobacco.

The bill would not restrict the federal government's ability to prevent trafficking from states where marijuana is legal to states where it isn't.

The reversals are fueled by a growing number of states that are successfully experimenting with changing marijuana laws - and enjoying the revenue they are bringing in to help their cash-strapped states. Schumer also plans to include in legislation an investment "to better understand the effects of THC on the brain and the efficacy of medicinal marijuana for specific ailments".

"I'd be a little cautious here at the federal level and see the laboratories of the states - see their outcomes before we make a decision", Schumer added.

"I think we're going down a risky road to be continuing to advocate for all this open marijuana use", said Rep. Claudia Tenny, R-New York.

Gardner said in a statement, "Since the campaign, President Trump has consistently supported states' rights to decide for themselves how best to approach marijuana". In 2014, two years after voters in Colorado and Washington approved legalization, Schumer affirmed that states should be allowed to adopt that policy, although he was not sure it was a good idea.

Schumer is introducing separate legislation on Friday - a date that is an unofficial holiday for marijuana users.

That's why this bill will inject real dollars into minority and women-owned businesses to ensure those disproportionately affected by marijuana criminalization can benefit from this new economy. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), whose state legalized marijuana in 2015, and Sen. Let's nationalize it... Legalization is just fine...

Legalization advocates say there's no one thing that happened recently to spark these politicians to suddenly switch from their long-entrenched views.
