PM Viktor Orban, East Europe's right-wing icon, becomes Hungary elections again

After a sweeping victory in the Hungarian elections Monday, Prime Minister Viktor Orban could soon back an effort by the government to ban NGOs that support migration into the country, a situation that his far-right Fidesz party believes to be a "national security risk".

Last week before the elections, some of them had hoped that such a scenario was about to play out, thinking that even the loss of a constitutional majority would be something of a defeat for Orban.

Brussels has launched a barrage of legal action against Hungary over its crackdown on civil society groups and its refusal to take in migrants under an European Union scheme.

Today's Hungary brandishes all of the essentials of rightists' authoritarian nation state, the type that proliferated in Europe between the world wars, and indeed fanned the flames that culminated in World War II.

While Orban's win was undeniable, the exact size of his margin of victory was not clear early Monday due in part to Hungary's complex electoral system, in which voters cast ballots for both an individual candidate in their region and another for a party list.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, who swept to power past year on an anti-immigration platform and is in coalition with far-right populists, also congratulated Orban on Twitter.

Perhaps even more impressive, in the eyes of say Marine Le Pen, is that a bloc of European fatherland proponents has converged in the highest offices of Central Europe. Instead, he mainly spoke to his supporters.

Orban accuses Soros and the organisations he funds of promoting mass Muslim and African immigration into Europe in order to undermine its Christian identity. The anti-Soros rhetoric came against a wider backdrop of antisemitism in Hungary.

"I don't see any program from the opposition, " Csorba said.

Fidesz's nearest challenger Jobbik, a far-right party that has recently moved towards the political centre, polled just under 20 per cent.

Seehofer's stance reflects a domestic debate over how to respond to the success of the anti-immigration, euroskeptic Alternative for Germany party, or AfD, which took votes from the main parties in September's elections to win its first seats in the Bundestag. Hungary should thus serve as an important lesson for other European countries: growing inequality and social tension may undermine the foundations of democracy and spark a revolt against the elite, enabling the rise of antiestablishment (and, in the Hungarian case, antidemocratic) forces that promise to do away with the status quo.

The Jobbik Party's foreign affairs chair, Marton Gyongyosi, blamed Orban for overreliance on the migrant issue during the "hysterical" election campaign.

"Dear friends, there's a big battle behind us, we secured a historic victory - we got a chance, we created a chance for us to protect Hungary", the Hungarian premier said.

That "constricted the space for genuine political debate, hindering voters' ability to make a fully informed choice", the OSCE said.

Traditionally, Budapest is the stronghold of the left and that the countryside is more right. Asselborn has floated the idea that Hungary should be suspended from the European Union for violating the bloc's democratic core values and treating refugees "like animals", an accusation that Hungary's Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó rejected while personally Asselborn in the process.
