Mitt Romney will face primary after setback in run for US Senate

The former presidential nominee appeared upbeat after it was announced that he was edged out by state lawmaker Mike Kennedy, who got 51 percent of the vote to Romney's 49 percent.

After previously saying he wouldn't accept an endorsement from the president, in February Romney happily accepted Trump's support for his Senate bid.

Mitt Romney said he is looking forward to a primary campaign after failing to win the nomination for the U.S. Senate seat in Utah at the state GOP convention. After multiple rounds of caucus voting, Romney failed to get a majority of the votes from the delegates, meaning he will face State Representative Mike Kennedy in a primary on June 26. The 2012 Republican presidential candidate and former MA governor failed to win the Utah Republican Party's nomination, which means he must face 11 challengers in a June primary for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring U.S. Sen.

Many still consider Romney to still be the favorite. Had either candidate received 60% of the vote, they would have clinched the nomination outright.

Romney, 71, went up against 11 other candidates Saturday seeking Utah's GOP nomination to succeed retiring Sen. (Aside from having far less name recognition, Kennedy has $257,000 on hand to Romney's $1.1 million.) Kennedy made a David and Goliath comparison, telling delegates he's their "stone, ready to be flung at the foes of liberty who seek to oppress us".

And during a Republican event at the end of March, Romney said he is more conservative on immigration than the president is - a position which doesn't match his previous statements.

"I'm exhausted", Kennedy told delegates before the last vote.

Romney asked for delegates' votes after spending two months on the campaign trail visiting dairy farms, taking selfies with college students and making stump speeches in small towns. "I'm exhausted of business as usual in Washington, D.C. If you want things to change, you need to vote for change".

After his failed 2012 presidential campaign, he moved to Utah, where he gained popularity after running as the first Mormon presidential nominee of a major political party. Trump fired back that Romney "choked like a dog" during his own White House run.
