'Mission accomplished', says Donald Trump on 'perfectly executed' Syria strike

Trump himself appeared on Thursday to cast doubt on at least the timing of any US -led military action, tweeting: "Never said when an attack on Syria would take place". As he spoke, explosions rocked Damascus.

He said the latest attack was created to destroy the Syrian regime's ability to produce chemical weapons.

Officials said coalition forces made sure Moscow was aware of an upcoming operation but didn't give Russians specific details.

The Kremlin on Saturday condemned Western air strikes on Syria where its armed forces are backing President Bashar al-Assad.

Trump said Assad's recent attack was a fallout of Russia's "failure" to keep the promise of eliminating Syria's chemical weapons.

President Trump did not specifically state the targets but did say the targets were associated with chemical weapon capabilities. Trump also called out Russian President Vladimir Putin and said that Putin had guaranteed an global agreement for Assad in 2013 to get rid of all his chemical weapons.

On Saturday, Putin reaffirmed Russia's view that a purported chemical attack in the Syrian town of Douma that prompted the strike was a fake.

President Donald Trump addressed the nation and says the goal was to of the actions. A second witness said the Barzah district of Damascus had been hit in the strikes. Barzah is the location of a major Syrian scientific research centre.

Overnight, U.S., British and French forces launched more than 100 missiles from ships and manned aircraft, targeting three of Syria's main chemical weapons facilities. "Clearly the Assad regime did not get the message past year", Mattis said.

French President Emmanuel Macron said France had joined the United States and UK because "we can not tolerate the recurring use of chemical weapons, which is an immediate danger for the Syrian people and our collective security".

Syria has denied carrying out the Douma attack and its ally, Russia, had warned that Western military strikes would risk starting a war. A US official told Reuters that Tomahawk cruise missiles also were involved.

"If it's the Russians, if it's Syria, if it's Iran, if it's all of them together, we'll figure it out, and we'll know the answers quite soon", Trump said on Monday.

AFP's correspondent in Damascus said several consecutive blasts were heard at 4:00 am local time (0100 GMT), followed by the sound of airplanes overhead.

"Dozens of men, women and children were massacred with chemical weapons", he said of the Douma incident a week ago - adding that "the red line had been crossed".

In his statement, President Trump also reprimanded Russian Federation and Iran for supporting Syria in using chemical weapons against its citizens.

British Prime Minister Theresa May won backing from her senior ministers on Thursday to take unspecified action with the United States and France to deter further use of chemical weapons by Syria. She described it as a "limited and targeted strike" aimed at minimising civilian casualties.

"Mission Accomplished" he remarked, as it was announced all United States missiles hit three targets that were involved in the production, development and storage of chemical weapons.

Other strikes targeted an army depot near Homs.

"On April 14, the USA backed by its allies carried out a missile strike against military and civilian infrastructure facilities in Syria".
