March in solidarity for Alfie Evans in Banbury called off

Mr Evans said on Thursday that he hoped to have a "positive" meeting with medical staff, where he confirmed the couple had dropped their bid to take Alfie to Italy for treatment.

The father of a sick British infant are calling supporters to "stand down" as the family works with the hospital to take him home. At root is a conflict and confusion about what human life and living means.

He had been suffering with seizures and remained as a patient at the hospital ever since.

Alfie's parents, Tom Evans and Kate James, made applications to the Court of Appeal after a High Court judge ruled they could take their son home from the hospital, but not overseas.

Doctors at the hospital were granted permission to turn off Alfie's life support and allow him to die, having concluded that his condition - an unidentified degenerative neurological disorder - was untreatable. It also prohibited his parents from seeking treatment elsewhere. This remark by McFarlane - that parents rights are subsidiary - highlights the grave injustice for which both the hospital and Britain's court system are responsible.

The death came after an easing of tensions between the family and the hospital.

Mr Justice Hayden castigated some of those from the Christian Legal Centre who have been making the parents' case; and he accused others of exploiting the case for their own political ends.

The parents of Charlie Gard shared their sympathy for Alfie's parents Friday, saying, "it's impossible to understand their pain". The parents' campaign was backed by the pope and Christian groups, which helped draw worldwide attention to the case. A Facebook campaign launched by the desperate parents now boasts more than 250,000 supporters.

Connie Yates and Chris Gard, whose son Charlie died in July previous year after he was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease, say they have watched Alfie's case unfold with a "heavy heart". Since then, the circus-like atmosphere has barely abated. Italy even granted Alfie citizenship and put a military plane on standby to transport him to Rome if the courts allowed it.

Charlie suffered from a rare genetic disease, mitochondrial depletion syndrome, which caused brain damage and left him unable to breathe unaided.

There is an "us and them" flavour to the discussion. As Tom said: 'Alder Hey keeps moving the goalposts.

"I am aware that recent months there have been some very constructive and honest attempts from families who've been through similar to engage with paediatricians and policy makers to try and improve the situation and prevent future families from going through what they went through", he said.

Alfie's life support was switched off on Monday at 9pm, and he died four days later. And making the most of the limelight is an organisation with a political agenda to outlaw homosexuality, ban abortions, and force transgender people into silence and suicide'.
