How Earth Day evolved from an idea to a global holiday

How Earth Day evolved from an idea to a global holiday

On 22 April 1970, millions of people marched in protest of the risky levels of smog created by 150 years of industrial development in the US.

Working year-round with 50,000 partner organizations in 192 countries, the Earth Day Network is bringing new voices into the environmental movement, representing youth and faculty, the faith community, minority groups, women, teachers, students and many others.

Two decades later, in 1990, Earth Day went global, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries and lifting environmental issues onto the world stage.

The Earth Day Network states: "From poisoning and injuring marine life to disrupting human hormones, from littering our beaches and landscapes to clogging our waste streams and landfills, the exponential growth of plastics is now threatening the survival of our planet". The goal is to change human attitude and behavior about plastic products.

Rufai Zakari, Creative Director, Hipsters of Nature, called for the use of plastic waste for artistic work as part of efforts to eradicate it.

On the 25th anniversary of Earth Day he stated, "The wealth of the nation is its air, water, soil, forests, minerals, rivers, lakes, oceans, scenic beauty, wildlife habitats and biodiversity... that's all there is. We can take a step in this direction by putting an end to plastic pollution", Banerjee tweeted this morning. And we have no idea and neither does the FDA, EPA, or any other federal agency, whether this lethal cocktail, which binds together with other toxins, is having an even more profound impact on our health and that of our kids. The effect of so much waste has an vast negative impact on the environment, as it can take 450 years for a single plastic bottle to decompose, according to a report published by des.nh.gov. Getting rid of single use plastics, using less plastic and getting involved in local legislation and regulation to reduce and recycle plastics is a good start. "Our marine waters are choking from plastic wastes", Villar said.

The world is already incapable of properly managing this enormous amount of waste, and the production of plastic is predicted to increase three times in the next 25 years. On this day, governments, corporations and citizens are encouraged to make pledges and support sustainability measures.

There are also some simple ways you can begin to reduce your plastic consumption. "On #EarthDay with focus on #EndPlasticPollution, urge all to curb use of plastics & polythene in daily life for well-being of mother Earth", said Patanik on his twitter handle.

Michael Gove has already set out a four-point plan to tackle plastic pollution in the United Kingdom, but there's still much more we can do. That's enough trash to cover every foot of coastline around the world with five full trash bags of plastic.compounding every year. Please have the items out as early as possible.
