Despite Trump Remarks, Pentagon Says Mission Not over in Syria

Mr Trump was reportedly persuaded by his national security team not to order a quick withdrawal at a meeting on Tuesday. Very soon, very soon we're coming out.

He's increasingly pressed foreign leaders - particularly in the oil rich Gulf states - to step up. "Left to their own devices — without US presence — ISIS or some other worldwide terror group will likely emerge in Syria again".

"We will have as of three months ago $7 trillion in the Middle East over the last 17 years", he said. "So I want to get back - I want to rebuild our nation", he said. But he said he has told the Saudis "if you want us to stay, maybe you" will have to pay the USA for the troops. "I want to start rebuilding our nation", Trump said during an press conference at the White House.

Trump has twice said he wants American troops to "get out" of Syria "very soon", even as top USA officials stressed the need to stay for the long term.

Currently, the United States has roughly 2,000 soldiers in Syria, and along with regional allies, has taken back more than 90 percent of the territory formerly held by the militant group. Many of the Syrian Kurdish fighters have left their USA -backed units in the southeast to head to Afrin in northwest Syria, where their compatriots are fighting against Turkey and its proxy, the rebel Free Syrian Army. However, Iran also has territorial and military investments in Syria; it is not clear whether any of those issues will come up in Wednesday's talks.

But he has insisted in private since at least February that he wants out of the country, multiple people familiar with the matter said.

"We should have kept the oil then", Trump said.

That's in contrast to members of his own administration, who insist the ISIS fight must continue until the terror group is eradicated.

At the same time, he acknowledged that U.S. troops would need to remain in the country as plans for withdrawal are made and as the battle against ISIS continues.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President Vladimir Putin of Russian Federation and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani met Wednesday, holding their second summit to discuss Syria's future.

The United Nations said Wednesday that it has conducted its first humanitarian mission to Raqa since the Syrian city was liberated from the Islamic State group, warning that returning civilians face enormous risks. That is our mission.

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that the USA president had instructed military leaders to prepare to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria but did not agree to a timeline by which to do so.

"It's a time", Trump said.

Other outlets said Mr Trump agreed to keep USA troops in Syria for an "undetermined period of time" to ensure Islamic State militants were defeated.

Without providing a timetable, President Trump doubled down on Tuesday, telling reporters he wanted to "get out" of Syria. "Let the other people take care of it", Trump said during a speech in OH last week. But while Mr. Trump has expressed enthusiasm for battling ISIS, he is reverting to the "America First" posture he pressed as a candidate, hoping to separate the United States from foreign involvement and military adventures overseas.

Two U.S. -led Coalition personnel were killed on Thursday, and five others wounded, in Mangij, Syria.

Indigenous allies, the backbone of US military strategy, "will be less likely to work with Special Forces advisers and others who ask them to stand up against extremists in places like Africa and other emerging hotspots", Mann warned.

A decision by Trump to withdraw from Syria would conflict with the views of his top advisers.
