Vaping Delivers Cancerous Chemicals, New Study of Teens Shows

Now, a new study shows adolescents who use them are exposed to significant levels of chemicals that could potentially cause cancer. To determine what chemicals teens are exposed to they tested the urine of 67 teens who smoke e-cigarettes only, 17 who use e-cigarettes and the old-fashioned kind of cigarettes, and 20 teens who don't use either.

Teenagers who used the e-cigarettes had as much as three times higher level of toxic chemicals in their urine than the non-smoking teens.

A team of researchers from the University of California San Francisco including Shannon Lea Watkins, Stanton Glantz and Benjamin Chaffee conducted the study of testing link between highly established smoking habits and e-cigarette.

"Electronic cigarettes generate nicotine in the vapor". Researchers discovered some of the chemicals were also found in adolescents who used flavored e-cigarettes without nicotine.

'Teenagers should be inhaling air, not products with toxins in them'.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry listed acrolein as a "volatile organic compound" that is used as a pesticide to control algae, weeds, bacteria, and mollusks, along with making other chemicals.

Last week, a study of almost 70,000 people found that daily e-cigarette use can double the risk for heart attack.

In 2016, more than two million United States middle and high school students used e-cigarettes in the past 30 days, including 4.3 percent of middle school students and 11.3 percent of high school students, compared with 3.2 percent of United States adults.

"Among our e-cigarette-only participants, the use of fruit-flavored products produced significantly higher levels of the metabolites of acrylonitrile", the scientists wrote in their findings.

E-#Cigarettes have become extremely popular over the years as they are known for being less risky in comparison to conventional cigarettes.

E-cigarettes are more an more used by teenagers because of the massive marketing campaigns that promote them as safe alternatives to classic smoking.

"There is nicotine in them, and that drives that to the brain, the part of the brain that can be very addictive", said Nancy Hans, executive director of the Prevention Council of Roanoke County. In 2016, 11 percent of high school students had used an e-cigarette in the past 30 days at the time of the survey - the CDC's definition of current use. He agrees that teens should not have access to e-cigarettes, but overall, he says the benefits outweigh the risks.

Dr Rubinstein said: 'I do not think teens are aware of the risks. The teens were divided into three groups: e-cigarette-only users, cigarette and e-cigarette users, and non-users.

'Moreover, numerous teens in my practice tell me that they feel e-cigarettes are safe and only produce "water vapor"'.
