Tehran, Damascus Committed to UNSC Resolution on Syria Ceasefire: Commander

Syrian opposition activists say Russian warplanes are taking part in bombarding Damascus' eastern suburbs, also known as eastern Ghouta, where many people are hiding in underground shelters with little food and medical supplies amid a tight government siege.

Rebels said they clashed with government forces on several front lines in the early hours of Sunday.

Iran's Arabic-language Al-Alam news channel reported the recapture of the Nashabeya and Hazrma areas as well as Farzat Hill by the Syrian military on Sunday.

According to a Farsi report by Tasnim News Agency, Baqeri said the Syrian army is seeking to clear its territories from terrorists in order to provide security for the people of Damascus, but so far 1,200 mortar shells have been fired at Damascus to disturb the security and calm of the people.

It would demand "that all parties cease hostilities without delay for at least 30 consecutive days throughout Syria for a durable humanitarian pause, to enable the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid and services and medical evacuations of the critically sick and wounded".

Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia rejected accusations of foot-dragging, saying that negotiations were needed to arrive at a demand for a ceasefire that was "feasible".

In another concession to Moscow, the ceasefire will not apply to operations against the Daesh terrorist group or Al-Qaeda, along with "individuals, groups, undertakings and entities" associated with the terror groups.

"Every minute this council waited on Russian Federation, the human suffering grew", she said right after the unanimous vote was taken.

The Russian diplomat added that the ceasefire can not be applied to operations against terrorist organizations in Syria, and counter-terrorism missions will continue.

Thousands of innocent lives have been claimed by the ongoing, bloody war, with several hundred more being added just this past week, many of whom are women, children and elderly, he said.

About 520 people have died and more than 2,500 have been wounded in eastern Ghouta since a relentless barrage of regime rocket fire, shelling and air strikes began last Sunday. Moscow, a key ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has veto power on the Security Council.

Iran said pro-Damascus forces would press ahead with attacks on eastern Ghouta, an insurgent enclave near the Syrian capital, as ground fighting continued.

A week of intense attacks on Eastern Ghouta killed at least 510 people, including 127 minors, according to latest figures. Hamza Birqdar, a spokesman for Jaish al-Islam, said attempted advances by regime forces had been thwarted but that fierce battles were raging.

The Security Council has been negotiating the draft resolution on the ceasefire for almost two weeks as the Syrian government has pressed on with a fierce offensive in the rebel-held enclave.

The Egyptian ministry of foreign affairs has released a statement on Wednesday expressing its concern over the situation in Eastern Ghouta in Syria and stressed that a ceasefire should be reached.
