Students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas who survived the Parkland, Florida, shooting in February are leading hundreds of thousands in the March For Our Lives demonstration Saturday in Washington, D.C. Sibling marches are additionally scheduled to occur in various cities across the United States.

Demonstrators from France, Germany, Spain and all the way from Tokyo took to the streets to protest gun violence in the United States. They also mobilized young people to register to vote.

The students are frustrated by what they say is the inaction of adults, especially politicians, who offer thoughts and prayers in the wake of school shootings but fail to pass legislation that protect kids from gun violence. Speaking on CBS's "Face the Nation" and other Sunday morning news programs, student Cameron Kasky called young voter turnout in recent elections "embarrassing".

He says the changes he wants to see are, stronger background checks, help for people with mental illness and perhaps a ban on assault weapons.

Tighter background checks are set to be introduced while ease of access to weapons is set to be restricted. "I didn't know March for Our Lives was a thing until it applied directly to me".

He told CNN: 'One of my best friends was shot not far from here, ' referring to Central Park in the city.

Leinonen said she hopes the march will send a signal "not just to the American people, but people all over the world" that the status quo is no longer working. The motto of the protests is Never Again MSD.

In Atlanta, Ben Stewart, a 17-year-old senior at Shiloh Hills Christian School in Kennesaw, Georgia, took part in a march in Atlanta to press for what he called "common-sense gun laws".

"Listening to the students from Parkland and across the country today is a reminder of what is possible when our future is in the right hands, and when we match inspiration with determination", she wrote on Twitter.

For many, the march was personal.
