Stay TOONED: John Bolton in the House

A strong supporter of the Iraq war and an advocate for aggressive use of American power, Bolton was unable to win Senate confirmation after his nomination to the United Nations post alienated many Democrats and even some Republicans. In his first year in office, Trump surrounded himself with foreign policy aides whose views spanned a wide spectrum.

Bolton has also shown that he knows how to influence Trump.

Former United Nations ambassador and stalwart Republican hawk John Bolton will replace Gen. HR McMaster as the national security adviser on April 9, President Trump has announced, RT reports.

The White House said McMaster's exit had been under discussion for some time and stressed it was not due to any one incident, including this week's stunning leak about Trump's recent phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both the president and his new top adviser share a long-standing animus to any treaties, worldwide laws or alliances that limit America's freedom to act on the world stage.

President Donald Trump said Thursday he would appoint Bolton to the post as his administration faces a key decision on whether to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal. Bolton, a former US ambassador to the United Nations, advocates regime change in Iran and is opposed to the nuclear deal.

Two State Department officials and two Western diplomats in Washington said Friday that their offices are now operating under the assumption that Trump will nearly surely pull out of the Iran deal.

Pressure group Human Rights Watch has denounced Pompeo as a defender of torture and discrimination against Muslims and homosexuals and wrote to urge the Senate to reject his appointment. All of the officials requested anonymity to discuss diplomatic conversations. Their biggest impact in the immediate term could be on Trump's planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, scheduled to take place by the end of May. "It is past time for Washington to bury this ineffective "carrots and sticks" approach", Bolton wrote in August in a Wall Street Journal op-ed calling for pre-emptive military strikes. Yet Bolton's allies have pointed out that for all the fiery rhetoric, Bolton has spent his career as a diplomat - he was once the State Department's top arms control official - and has never sought a military role.

What Stands Between Bolton and Blowing Up the World? Trump tweeted that McMaster had done "an outstanding job & will always remain my friend". And, as his ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley pushes ahead with efforts to cut USA funding for the world body, he will have a die-hard unilateralist by his side, cheering him on.

At a time when the world needs to invest in an global system, and multilateral diplomacy, Bolton has been vocal about his disdain for the United Nations including slashing USA financial support. Trump, for example, made a campaign-trail mantra out of his opposition to the Iraq War, an intervention Bolton championed. 'General McMaster's leadership of the National Security Council staff has helped my administration accomplish great things to bolster America's national security, ' the president said in a statement.

Trump had mused to advisers and outside allies about McMaster's ouster for months - the pair had never formed a strong rapport - and rumors of his replacement had swirled in Washington for months.

But neither had lobbied for Bolton, and now they must contend with a powerful voice who has his own public profile and extensive experience maneuvering in government.
