South African cricket officials forced to apologise for Sonny Bill masks

The second Test between Australia and South Africa at Port Elizabeth has reached a new low off the pitch with Proteas' fans allowed into the venue wearing Sonny Bill Williams' masks in an attempt to aggravate David Warner.

Clive Eksteen and Altaaf Kazi have been ordered to CSA headquarters in Johannesburg for a meeting, and the chances are high that they could lose their jobs.

The controversy forced Cricket South Africa to issue an official apology to Cricket Austraila and the Australian team, who were angered by the image showing CSA's commercial manager Clive Eksteen and its head of communications Altaaf Kazi grinning with three supporters, who donned the masks.

Off-field drama aside, Warner put in a solid first-innings display notching up 63 as Australia were bowled out for 243 on the first day of the second Test.

There have been calls on social media for spectators to wear the masks following a row between Warner and South Africa's Quinton de Kock during the first Test, which Warner blamed was sparked when De Kock insulted his wife.

In a statement released on Saturday morning, CSA said: "While CSA respects the rights of its fans to represent their own points of view, CSA does not associate itself with these actions and urges all Protea supporters from refraining from being involved in distasteful or unwelcome actions that may impact the image of the sport and its supporters".

Australian players and officials are reportedly outraged about the photo.

Candice Warner was associated with Williams in a well-publicised toilet incident in Sydney in 2007.

Warner and de Kock were both fined after their ugly bust-up in Durban and the two teams have been warned by the match referee to keep their tempers in check.

CA is furious with the conduct of Eksteen and Kazi, with chairman David Peever and chief executive James Sutherland expressing their disgust to their South African counterparts.

CSA said it would follow its "normal internal processes", with regards to Eksteen and Kazi, which will likely begin with an internal investigation.

According to Fairfax Media, the Australian camp were aware of the masks going into the first day of the Test, and asked that they be banned.
