Protesting Maharashtra farmers reach Bhiwandi, demand loan waiver

Among their other demands are implementation of the reasonable recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission, and 24/7 water and electricity supply.

The 35-year-old Bhausaheb Gangode, a farmer from Nashik district 's Dindori who has participated in the long march said that the government has rejected his application for transferring the ownership of forest land in his name.

The agitators commenced their march from Nashik on March 6 passing through the farmer and tribal dominated areas of Nashik and Thane district. Many farmers leaders said that it should not be considered as a communist protest as it is for the betterment of the farmers.

However, he clarified that he had come with party chief Uddhav Thackeray's message and not as a cabinet minister in the state government.

"Govt has woken up so invited farmers for talks".

Thane (Maharashtra), Mar 11 (ANI): All India Kisan Sabha's protest march reached Thane's Octroi Naka today. Refusing to comment on whether they would be allowed to march to the assembly building tomorrow, joint police commissioner Deven Bharti said, "Top ministers are speaking to them". They in large numbers are marching towards Mumbai to press their demands.

Another farmer named Kangodi had this to say, "I am fed up with government policies".

If loan waiver is provided to all the farmers without any guidelines then the burden on the State exchequer will increase to ₹35,000 crore.

Keeping the fact that Monday is the first day of the week and also a day when Class X Board exams are taking place, the farmers' march will cause a lot of inconvenience, the government argued, according to sources.

Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil also lashed out at the government and asked why it "waited so long" to understand farmers woes.

On Monday, the march will be addressed by AIKS national president Ashok Dawale, CPI (M) MLA JP Gavit, state president Kisan Gujar and working president Arjun Ade among others. Sharad Pawar led NCP has also offered its support to farmers.

BJP also reached out to the protesters on Sunday with Mahajan meeting a delegation of farmers as a representative of the chief minister. "We are prepared to work with the farmers shoulder to shoulder to achieve their demands", Aditya said.

The agitating farmers' perseverance could be gauged from the fact that they have been walking since Tuesday last when they left Nashik in north Maharashtra, braving the scorching Sun and the intense humidity.
