Del Potro tops Anderson for his biggest title since — ATP Acapulco

It took Kevin Anderson more than two years to capture his fourth ATP World title but he's on the verge of a second ATP World Tour title in as many tournaments.

Continuing a rich vein of form, Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro defeated hard-serving Kevin Anderson to claim the ATP Mexican Open title here on Sunday.

"I think [Del Potro] played really well", said Anderson.

After the match, Del Potro said, "I beat three top 10 guys in the same tournament, which is very important for myself". The Argentine held at deuce in the following game with two winners to cement the break, and he had a set point on the return a few minutes later on Anderson's serve. The fifth seed was still controlling play, though, and lost just four points in his first three service games of the set. He's obviously a tough competitor and a great player. Donaldson was a flawless 20-for-20 on first-serve points and 12-of-14 on his second-serve attempts. Anderson hit 18 aces in the victory, and hit a wicked inside-out forehand victor to clinch the battle. "I broke just twice and that was the key of the match". "I'll try to learn as much as I can from tonight's match". "I just needed to do a little bit more today". "I have a shot at playing for a title".

The Italian struggled with Jarry's big serve early in the match and the 22-year-old Chilean, playing in his first ATP final, looked intent on claiming his first tour crown as he stormed through the first set in 21 minutes. Donaldson is projected to climb to a career-high No. 48 in the ATP Rankings on Monday. "6'8" Anderson fell as he approached the net at 15-0 up. The fifth seed is a combined 0-10 against his possible opponents in the Acapulco final.

The 20-year-old German Zverev - the youngest player in the semifinals - beat American Ryan Harrison 6-4, 6-1. This is the first ATP 500 title for del Potro since 2013 when he conquered Rotterdam, Washington, Tokyo and Basel and his fourth in the last five seasons.

"It was confusing for me and I made a lot of mistakes, probably because I lost some concentration, but I'm really happy I finished 6-4 and didn't go to a tiebreak or something like that". I feel like I'm playing great tennis. "I'm looking forward to it. [It's] just about recovering and resting up right now and being as prepared as possible for tomorrow".
