California county urged to avoid Trump's 'sanctuary' lawsuit

Trump's justice department has since sued the state over its three laws - Senate Bill 54 or the "California Values Act", Assembly Bill 450 or the "Workplace Raid" law and Assembly Bill 103 or the "Detention Review" law - arguing that they are unconstitutional.

The county's board of supervisors added its voice to the resistance as well, voting Tuesday to protest SB54 and asking county lawyers to join the Trump administration in a lawsuit seeking to block SB54 and two other sanctuary laws.

"We need to protect our families and our homes here in Orange County", Steel said in a statement ahead of the vote. Hillary Clinton won more votes than Trump in the county in the 2016 election.

California laws that went into effect on January 1 restrain how federal agents go about detaining unauthorized immigrants for deportation in cities throughout the state.

Speaking during his opening monologue on "Hannity" Tuesday night, Sean praised Orange County officials who are openly rejecting California's "unconstitutional" Sanctuary City policies; saying the state's liberal legislators are violating federal law.

Barnes (pictured above) said sheriffs considered challenging the law in court but chose to defer to the federal government.

The move highlights longstanding divisions over immigration in California. For years, some local governments have sought to help federal immigration agents pick up prisoners from their jails to prevent them from being released back into their communities, while others have tried to keep their distance to encourage immigrant residents to trust police enough to come forward to report crimes. Immigrant advocates rallied outside Tuesday's meeting, some holding signs with slogans such as "Melt ICE", a reference to Immigration and Customs Enforcement that enforces immigration laws.

"Our focus is on criminals, not on the community", he said, and reiterated the policy does not mean they will pursue and detain people suspected to be in the country illegally.

Comparing the incident to an oft-used refrain by immigrant rights advocates who complain that deportations separate immigrant families, Robinson told the board: "Kate's family is forever separated from her".

By posting the entire list of inmates and release times, the department says U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement can get the information without the sheriff's office having to communicate specifically.

"History tells us that we will win. The law, however, does not limit information that is available to the public".

Sen. Kevin de León, D-Los Angeles, chastised Orange County leaders in a statement Tuesday: "This kind of obsessive immigrant bashing is embarrassing to the county and its residents, and seems created to court the approval of a racist President and his cronies".

State Sen. Kevin de Leon, a Los Angeles Democrat who wrote the state's law, called the decision a "pretty sad use of taxpayer resources". "Will you be able to do that?"

Sameer Ahmed, a staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, said some cities appear to be discussing largely political resolutions, not local laws.

The Democratic-leaning city sued the U.S. government in February, after the Justice Department sent it a letter demanding it hand over documents to prove it was complying with a federal law that requires municipalities to share information with immigration officials about inmates housed in local jails.
