Australia slaps 12-month bans on Smith and Warner

Australia slaps 12-month bans on Smith and Warner

Australia head coach Darren Lehmann has called for disgraced trio Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft to be given a second chance despite more damning details of their roles in the ball-tampering scandal emerging.

Warner will not be considered for a team leadership position in the future, CA added, while Smith and Bancroft will not be considered for such roles until 12 months after their bans end.

Captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner have been banned from global cricket for a year and stripped of their leadership positions, with the latter branded "never to lead again" by Cricket Australia (CA).

With the scandal becoming a national tragedy for Australia following Smith's admission that he and the team's "leadership group" cheated deliberately, CA chairman, David Peever, expects to share the probe findings with the public as early as on Wednesday.

Having been handed a 12-month ban and been sent home from South Africa by Cricket Australia, a devastated Smith touched down in Sydney on Thursday night and faced the music shortly afterwards in a highly-charged airport press conference room.

The fourth and final Test gets underway in Johannesburg on Friday.

Vice captain Warner has reportedly been ostracized by the team's fast bowlers, who feel he unfairly linked them to the row, and he yesterday stepped down as captain of Indian Premier League side Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Development comes days after Smith gave up his captaincy of the Rajasthan Royals. Match-fixing in cricket leads to a life ban and it's a bit of a surprise that both the cricketers have just been banned for one year.

In addition to their national suspension, all three players will be barred from representing their states in the Sheffield Shield during this time and can not play in the next edition of Australia's Big Bash League.

Bancroft, captured on television footage rubbing a homemade form of sandpaper, constructed from sticky tape and grit from the playing surface, onto the ball in an attempt to change its behaviour, was suspended for nine months. They will also have to complete 100 hours of voluntary service in community cricket to regain the trust of the fans. Virat Kohli's men are scheduled to tour Australia to play four Tests, three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. "I love the game of cricket, I love entertaining young kids, I love kids wanting to play the great game of cricket that I love", he said.

Magellan are the latest company to sever financial ties with those involved in the ball-tampering, which sparked widespread outrage and criticism of the Australian team.

"As I've stated before, I had no prior knowledge of the (ball-tampering) incident and do not condone the incident at all, but good people can make mistakes", Lehmann said, initially reading from a prepared statement.

"The feeling from the review is that this is an isolated incident but there are things that I don't want to go into too much detail right now", he said.
