Twitter Cracks Down on Automation and Use of Multiple Accounts

Nunes' tweet was especially odd in light of today's Twitter news, in which it has been reported that the social media giant conducted a "purge" of sorts, eliminating many more bot accounts and instituting strict limits on how many times a single user can retweet information.

A Twitter spokesperson has now weighed in saying, "Twitter's tools are apolitical, and we enforce our rules without political bias". The apparent cause was the latest culling by Twitter of accounts that in some way violated the company's terms of service, a Twitter spokesperson told Ars, including "behaviors that indicate automated activity or violations of our policies around having multiple accounts, or abuse". Other users also reported Wednesday that Twitter was asking them to confirm that they were real people before being allowed to login to the service.

Many report losing a significant number of followers, while other users report being locked out of their accounts and being instructed to share a phone number in order to regain access to their accounts.

Fake accounts on Twitter have been traced to a Kremlin-linked "troll farm" accused of inflaming political divisions on hot-button national issues such as gun control after last week's Florida school shooting. That's why some people may be experiencing suspensions or locks.

In a statement, Twitter denied cracking down on conservative voices.

The social network has suspended numerous suspected bot accounts since the 2016 Presidential election. "This is part of our ongoing, comprehensive efforts to make Twitter safer and healthier for everyone". According to researchers at the University of Southern California, conservatives retweeted Russian trolls about 31 times more than liberals and produced 36 times more tweets.

And yet President Trump continues to tweet disparaging nonsense about the Federal Bureau of Investigation, or retweet the pathetic tweet from a Facebook exec who insisted that most of the $100,000 Russian ad buy was "AFTER the election".

Twitter made substantial changes today that will greatly impact social media managers who oversee multiple accounts and use automation apps to manage their Twitter activity. These users mocked the right. Shown her is a Twitter sign outside of the company's headquarters in San Francisco in 2016.

In addition, Twitter is also making changes to its API which will limit users' ability perform coordinated actions across multiple accounts. Johnson said the tweet was not intended as a threat.
