Syria Denounces Turkey's Use of Toxic Gases in Afrin

Two Turkish soldiers were martyred and one was wounded on Saturday during operations in Turkey and northwestern Syria, according to the Turkish military, Anadolu reports. We also said they shouldn't deny the weapons delivered and training given [to the YPG].

Turkey launched an air and ground assault last month in Syria's northwest Afrin region to drive the YPG from the area south of its border. Tillerson said the United States would look at any evidence Turkey presents, which in the past has been judged by courts to be insufficient for the extradition Turkey wants.

Relations between Washington and its main Muslim ally in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation have been strained to the breaking point by several issues, above all Turkey's anger over USA support for the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia, which Turkey sees as terrorists.

The spark for the sharp downturn in relations has been Turkey's almost month-old military campaign against the USA -allied forces in the northern Syrian Kurdish enclave of Afrin, with Mr. Erdogan and his aides saying the Turkish army's offensive will expand despite the presence of US military special forces in their path. "We were either going to correct this or it was going to take a turn for the worse".

Tillerson's visit is part of a flurry of high-level meetings between top US and Turkish officials in recent days.

The SDF alliance is dominated by fighters from the PYD's armed wing, known as the People's Protection Units (YPG).

"Generally speaking, if Turkey was not being utmost careful about not killing civilians in Afrin, and followed the methods [Syian President Bashar] al-Assad implemented on his own people, this operation would probably have been concluded by now", he said.

In May 2017, Macron said he had set a "red line" at the use of chemical weapons.

Cavusoglu expressed Turkish anger that a cleric they suspect of being behind a 2016 attempted coup is living in Pennsylvania.

The complex relationship between the Damascus government and the Syrian Kurds, which each holds more territory than any other side in the war, will be an important element in determining the future course of the conflict.

The Turkish military has been advancing slowly in its offensive against Kurdish militias in Afrin.

"We've agreed that we will continue to examine all the evidence that can be provided to us", Tillerson said of Gulen's case.
