Seaside Bomber Sentenced To Life

Seaside Bomber Sentenced To Life

"Ahmad Khan Rahimi will spend the rest of his life behind bars", said FBI Assistant Director William F. Sweeney Jr.

A United States restaurant worker inspired by Osama bin Laden was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday for wounding 31 people in a 2016 NY bombing, branded "extremely dangerous" by a federal judge.

Ahmad Khan Rahimi injured 30 people when one of his pressure cooker bombs exploded in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood in 2016.

Rahimi was sentenced to multiple life terms in prison.

He moved to the United States in 1995 with his family and became a naturalized citizen in 2011. "That's when I started" noticing discrimination, Rahimi said in his emotionless five-minute statement.

"We intend to appeal", Rahimi's attorney, Xavier Donaldson, said outside of the courthouse here, after the hearing.

Rahimi wasn't charged with terrorism, but his father, Mohammad Rahimi, said he contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation to warn that his son may have been radicalized and the agency informed him his son wasn't engaged in terrorist behavior. He was convicted of eight criminal charges in October 2017, including bombing a public place and using a weapon of mass destruction.

Federal Judge Richard Berman, who presided over the trial, imposed the sentence Tuesday in NY.

While imprisoned, Rahimi has completed classes in business, entrepreneurship and drama, Donaldson wrote.

Rahimi "has been attempting to radicalize fellow inmates in the Metropolitan Correction Center by, among other things, distributing propaganda and publications issued by terrorist organizations", according to a letter from then-Acting US Attorney Joon H. Kim to Judge Berman.

Rahimi's first explosive went off on the morning of September 17, 2016, in Seaside Park, New Jersey, along a route for a Semper Five Marine Corps Charity 5K., No one was injured because the race had been miraculously delayed from its 9 a.m. start time.

The third bomb was found four blocks north at 27th Street.

Prosecutors told his two-week trial previous year it was a "miracle" that nobody was killed in the September 17, 2016 attack.

Rahimi is also charged with shooting and injuring two police officers in New Jersey, when they'd apprehended him the day after the Chelsea bombings.

A manhunt ensued after the blasts and ended in a shootout two days later.

Like the bombs found the next day at a train station in Elizabethtown, New Jersey, however, this device was discovered before detonation. The bomb left along the Seaside Park boardwalk was a pipe bomb stuffed in a trash can; the NY bombs were "pressure cooker" style devices.
