Melissa McCarthy returns to college in Life of the Party trailer

It's puzzling, because it would seem Mr. Falcone would know better than anyone what makes Melissa McCarthy amusing, and he keeps helming her un-funniest movies. Debuting on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Monday, February 5, the nearly-two-minute trailer kicks off with Deanna collecting a huge pile of remembrances of her married life and setting them on fire. Not only does McCarthy star in the movie, but her husband, Ben Falcone, directed it.

The first trailer for New Line Cinema's college-centric Life of the Party has dropped, and it has Melissa McCarthy in all her alcohol-consuming, "cool mom" physical comedy glory. The only catch, and from the look of things in the trailer, the source of most of the comedy, is that Deanna's headed to the same university attended by her daughter Maddie (Molly Gordon).

In addition to McCarthy, the rest of the cast includes Gillian Jacobs (Community), Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids), Julie Bowen (Modern Family), Matt Walsh (Veep), Stephen Root (Get Out), Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook), Jessie Ennis (Better Call Saul) Adria Arjona (True Detective), Debby Ryan (Jessie) and Jimmy O. Yang (Silicon Valley).

Falcone and McCarthy reunited with The Boss' director of photography Julio Macat and production designer Rusty Smith for Life of the Party.

Life of the Party hits theaters May 11, 2018.
