China dismisses 'absurd' African Union HQ spying claim

China's government has denied reports that it spied on the servers at the African Union's Chinese-built headquarters for more than five years, gaining access to confidential information.

"It's so absurd", said Kuang Weilin, China's representative to the, who said he suspects the report was meant to harm China's relations with Africa.

He said he found it very hard to understand why a serious newspaper like Le Monde could publish such a story.

According to a report by the Mail and Guardian, both newspapers in the United Kingdom, in January 2017, the information technology unit at the African Union's headquarters in Addis Ababa noticed something unusual, according to a stunning investigation in French newspaper Le Monde.

Anonymous sources told the newspaper that the discovery in January 2017 resulted in the change of servers while security experts from Algeria who checked the entire building found microphones installed in desks.

According to the ambassador, the article in question, published Friday by La Monde, will "damage the image of the newspaper", but not the relationship between China and Africa.

He cited a report that revealed that the African continent lost $50 billion annually to illicit flow of capital and stated that the manifestation of corruption in Africa was a demonstration of need for strong leadership.

Speaking on his maiden appearance at the African Union summit, President Mnangagwa said he was pleased with the way he was received in Addis Ababa, where he reiterated that Zimbabwe was open for business.

It was earlier reported that 23 African countries including Nigeria sealed a deal to operate a single air aviation market.

He said he wants to mobilise greater support for United Nations peacekeeping forces in Africa, including those battling extremist violence in Somalia, Nigeria and in West Africa.

"Through these efforts, we have recovered significant territories that were previously under the command of Al Shabaab", President Kenyatta said.

"I don't worry about being spied on in AU headquarters".

"We have also facilitated humanitarian relief by securing the main supply routes to enable safe delivery of humanitarian assistance to most of the affected populations", the President added.
