Amazon Nixes Lock-Screen Ads on Prime Exclusive Phones

Amazon Nixes Lock-Screen Ads on Prime Exclusive Phones

Prices for the current lineup of Prime Exclusive handsets will rise by $20 starting tomorrow, according to multiple reports. The retailer states that the change is meant to make the user experience better, by letting owners use the increasingly more prevalent fingerprint readers and unlocking features that bypass the lock screen. It was annoying, sure, but many people were happy to take Amazon up on the offer.

Amazon has announced that, starting 7 February 2018, it will remove lock screen ads from its discounted Prime Exclusive Phone program. The excitement wore off though when customers realized the caveat: Amazon Prime Exclusive phones come with lock screen ads and promotions, which is why the prices were drastically discounted. For those devices already out in the world, updates will start rolling out next week that remove the ads.

Amazon recognizes the customers rely on phone manufacturers lockscreens for security such as facial recognition, as well as using the lockscreen for personalization. The same thing goes for speedy fingerprint sensors. Here's the full statement. Amazon also said that removing the ads from the lock screen will allow for these phones to support features like facial recognition and fingerprint scanners. But in return, Amazon plastered the phones' lock screens with advertisements and special offers.

Amazon's Prime Exclusive Phone Program is very admirable. Of course, you'll still be left with Amazon's Android apps, a dedicated widget, and a few notifications that all show adverts, but at least you won't be greeted by them every time you check your phone. The company also touts the ability to personalize your screen as a motivating factor, although many would have argued that has been important from the outset.
