US To Decide On Whether To Withhold $255m In Aid To Pakistan

Of foremost concern is Islamabad's attitude toward the powerful Haqqani network, accused of some of the most lethal attacks on USA forces in Afghanistan and dubbed by America's former top military officer Mike Mullen as a "veritable arm" of Pakistani intelligence.

The U.S. has repeatedly called on Pakistan to crack down on extremists in its border regions, including militants in the Taliban-linked Haqqani network, and warned in August that it was withholding millions of dollars in military assistance.

"Pakistan is ready to publicly provide every detail of the U.S. aid that it has received", Asif said in a strongly worded statement in response to Trump's tweet that accuses Pakistan of providing safe havens to terrorists that the USA is hunting in Afghanistan.

It was not immediately clear what had prompted the president to comment on Pakistan.

"We will respond to President Trump's tweet shortly inshallah. Will let the world know the truth.difference between facts & fiction.", Asif tweeted.

Lawmaker Hina Butt said Trump's criticism was "baseless".

Trump announced his administration's plans for the continuing USA military engagement in Afghanistan in August, which specifically called on Pakistan to do more to fight terrorism.

As part of that, the USA has been giving Pakistan aid in the form of money as well as weapons and technology - often at subsidised costs - to combat terrorism on its soil. "We don't need your aid, our sacrifices should be acknowledged".

President Trump kicked off the new year discussing the protests in Iran and expressing his discontentment with Pakistan.

After the rescue, President Trump labeled it "a positive moment for our country's relationship with Pakistan".

Saeed was recently released from house arrest after a Pakistani court cited lack of evidence against him in the 26/11 Mumbai attack case.

And Secretary of State Rex Tillerson wrote an op-ed article for the New York Times published Thursday stating that "we are prepared to partner with Pakistan to defeat terrorist organizations seeking safe havens, but Pakistan must demonstrate its desire to partner with us".

The New York Times reported on December 29 that USA officials had sought but been denied access to a member of the Taliban-linked Haqqani network captured in Pakistan who potentially could provide information about at least one American hostage. He also hailed Trump's remark on Pakistan a victory of India's diplomatic efforts.
