Trump Administration Cuts Off Haitians From Seasonal Work Visas

People from nearly 80 countries are eligible to apply for temporary worker program visas in the US and the list is published every year.

The Department of Homeland Security gave notice this week that it plans to bar folks from Haiti - which the president referred to as a "sh-thole" country last week - from applying for H-2A and H-2B visas, according to NBC News.

'Haiti has shown no improvement in these areas, and the Secretary of Homeland Security has determined, with the concurrence of the Secretary of State, that Haiti's inclusion on the 2018 H-2A and H-2B lists is no longer in the US interest'.

A DHS report published last year stated that Haitians on a variety of non-immigrant visas, including H-2As and H-2Bs, had a roughly 40 percent visa overstay rate in the 2016 fiscal year.

Haitians are no longer eligible to apply for temporary agricultural and seasonal visas, the Trump administration ruled Wednesday.

The author of the study, Michael Clemens, said, "The administration has made it clear that it sees no benefit from Haitian immigrants in the United States, and that's incorrect".

'I love the people. There has been a tremendous benefit from Haitian migrants to the USA, including on this particular visa.

The visas allow United States businesses to bring in seasonal workers from other countries. Haiti had been included in that list since 2012, after a successful lobbying campaign by humanitarian groups and both Republican and Democratic lawmakers to make Haiti eligible for short-term worker visas that could help Haitians recover from the catastrophic 2010 natural disaster. "There's a tremendous warmth", he said. The island nation was added to the list of countries whose citizens are allowed to apply for the visas in 2010 after a powerful 7.0 magnitude quake destroyed the country, according to The Hill.

'And they're very hard-working people'.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has released details about the next steps for about 60,000 Haitians to renew immigration benefits under a program the Trump administration is ending next year. The number of Haitians who came into the country with nonagricultural visas was not disclosed by the government.

Before Hegeman hired Haitians, his business had trouble finding local workers.

'These guys were awesome.

'That was one of my biggest concerns, ' he said.
