Teacher handcuffed, removed from school board meeting in Louisiana

A Louisiana middle school language arts teacher who spoke out about a superintendent's pay raise at a school board meeting was handcuffed by an Abbeville city marshal after being escorted out of the session, WWL reported.

Deyshia Hargrave, a middle school teacher in the Vermilion Parish school system, was videotaped being escorted out of a room and then wrestled into handcuffs by a city marshal on January 8.

"I have a serious issue with a superintendent or any person of leadership getting any type of raise", Hargrave can be heard saying in the video.

Board president Anthony Fontana ruled Hargrave "out of order" after she posed several questions - and it was not a question-and-answer period.

Despite reports from KATC that Puyau told media that the school board would not file charges against Hargrave, the teacher was booked on charges of remaining while forbidden and resisting an officer. Hargrave voluntarily left the meeting, but as she stepped out into the hallway, the marshal allegedly pushed her and then placed her in handcuffs.

"I'm not - you just pushed me to the floor", a visibly shaken Hargrave responded. The board does not plan to press charges against the teacher. She has since bonded out.

It is unclear if the security officer was ordered to arrest Hargrave and remove her from the meeting.

She had gone years without a raise, so she wanted to know why the superintendent was getting one.

Ms Hargrave told the board: "you're making our job more difficult" by not addressing valid pay concerns.

School board member Laurie Leblanc did speak out for Ms Hargrave after the incident, saying: "what happened here tonight, the way that females are treated in Vermillion Parrish.I have never seen a man removed from this room".

"I personally apologize for the Vermilion Parish School Board", she said, adding, "This is a sad day for Vermilion Parish".

The teacher was still jailed and later released on bond. Ms Hargrave did not appear to be raising her voice during the meeting.

The 74 was unable to reach the marshal's office or the school district Tuesday morning.
