Michigan State AD resigns in wake of Larry Nassar scandal

When it was first organized, it was for a call for the university's president to step down, but the fact Lou Anna K. Simon has resigned is not stopping students from still holding a demonstration on campus. He has been the Spartans' athletic director since 2008 and was chairman of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee last season.

Simon is a graduate of Indiana State University. That's what Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said after sentencing Larry Nassar, the former Olympic gymnastics doctor, to 40 to 175 years in prison for sexually assaulting over 150 young female athletes, including Olympic medalists McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman and Simone Biles.

"I have a daughter here, I have a daughter who dreams of coming here".

ESPN released an in-depth investigative story about two hours after Hollis' announcement and scrutinized the way football coach Mark Dantonio and basketball coach Tom Izzo handled allegations of sexual assault against their players.

While the university president, Lou Anna Simon, resigned earlier this week after enormous pressure from board members, that does little to make up for the years of neglected abuse.

Hollis has served as MSU's 18th athletics director since January 1, 2008.

Michigan State student body President Lorenzo Santavicca, a 21-year-old senior from Macomb Township, said "who knew what and when" will be the key question to be answered.

USA Gymnastics said on Friday that its entire board of directors would resign in the wake of Nassar's sentencing, complying with a request to do so by the U.S. Olympic Committee.

His resignation comes as the NCAA is opening an investigation into the Larry Nassar scandal. "As a campus community, we must do everything we can to ensure that this never happens again to make sure that any sexual assault never occurs". Another, Joel Ferguson, apologized at Friday's board meeting for conducting an interview in which he said more was happening at Michigan State than "this Nassar thing". The Education Department already was reviewing separate complaints about the school's compliance with Title IX, the law that requires public schools to offer equal opportunities to both genders, and compliance with requirements about providing campus crime and security information.

The meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday.

"Since my first day on the job as athletic director, my focus has always been on the student-athlete", Hollis said. Trustees plan to discuss the presidential transition. Let us be known as a school that listens to our students.

Two announced they will not seek re-election.
