Ibuprofen Linked to Men's Fertility Problems

Ibuprofen Linked to Men's Fertility Problems

A new joint Danish-French research project has discovered that taking the medicament for only 14 days can cause damage to men's testosterone production, reports DR Nyheder. A growing number of studies shed light on concerning health issues that may arise from NSAIDs and ibuprofen in particular.

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug sold without a prescription for short-term treatment of pain, inflammation from injuries, and fever. The men were then divided into two groups, 14 in an ibuprofen group and 17 in a placebo group.

Researchers published their findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, noting that consumption of ibuprofen resulted in "compensated hypogonadism", a condition in which men have normal levels of testosterone but higher levels of the luteinizing hormone, which stimulates the production of testosterone, The International Study for Sexual Medicine said. This condition is linked to a reduction in fertility.

The study shows that it has a negative impact on the testicles of young men, altering their sex hormone production and affecting their reproductive health.

Though the exact reasons for the decline are not yet known; in a recent study, researchers have linked male infertility to Ibuprofen - a common painkiller. Each dose was 600mg, equivalent to three over-the-counter pills. In 2017, the NSAID that goes by brand names including Motrin and Advil raises the risk of heart attacks.

But the amount and frequency of ibuprofen use in the study is fairly atypical-the maximum recommended dosage of 1,200 milligrams per day every day for two weeks.

Doctors in Copenhagen who led the study said that while the disorder was mild and temporary in the volunteers, they feared it could become permanent in long-term ibuprofen users.

Previous research by European scientists showed that male babies whose mothers took ibuprofen experienced disturbances to their endocrine system, according to CNN. Professional athletes, however, do tend to take ibuprofen frequently, so this research could spark a serious look into the way those under physical strain treat their aches and pains.

It's also not clear whether the same hormonal effects would be seen in men taking lower doses of ibuprofen, or whether the effects are reversible, particularly in men who take ibuprofen for long periods, study co-author Bernard Jégou, director of the National Institute for Research on Environmental and Occupational Health in France, told CNN.
