Flu cases on the rise in Hays County

In the first week of January, there were 1,750 new confirmed flu-associated hospitalizations in OH compared to 925 the week before.

In Dallas County, 18 flu-related deaths have been reported this season, according to WFAA.

The Ohio Department of Health said influenza A, or H3N2, is the most common virus this season. The very young, older people and those with underlying health conditions are especially susceptible to the flu.

Last year, 12 states had widespread cases, but this year there are 46.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has great resources to help people better understand the flu, she added.

"Flu is hard to predict", said ODH Medical Director Dr. Clint Koenig.

"It's safe to say that we are now experiencing a flu outbreak and these three voluntarily reported flu-related deaths reflect that", said Chief Epidemiologist Russell Jones.

Two more patients died of Swine Flu at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura, taking the death toll to 27 this season.

Antiviral medications can shorten the course of the flu and reduce its severity. Chills, body aches, sore throat, coughing and fever are some of the symptoms that the flu can cause. At this time a year ago, there were 834 total cases, with 282 in the final week of December.

Wischmeier says it's still worthwhile getting a flu shot, even though the season has been underway in full force. "There are reports that the vaccine is only 10 percent effective this year, but it's really too early to tell".

Get vaccinated. The list of reasons to avoid vaccination is short (such as having a severe reaction to the vaccine in the past); and no, the standard injected flu vaccine can not cause you to get the flu.

In addition to vaccination, public information officer Alexandra Reed said consistent hand washing and staying home if you are sick are the keys to preventing the virus' spread.

Canada's flu shot was less effective than usual this year, said the National Post.

With the fresh deaths, the death toll due to H1N1 influenza in Kashmir has risen to 27 this season, which is highest so far.

The department advised people to seek emergency care only if they are at high risk for complications or experiencing severe symptoms.

White County Public Health nurse Marsha Oilar says she administers 600 doses of the flu vaccine each year.
