Federal Agency Returns to Accepting Requests Under DACA

Federal Agency Returns to Accepting Requests Under DACA

The DACA program was created in 2012 by former President Obama to temporarily shield from deportation undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S.as children.

"They just want to talk and take desperately needed money away from our Military", he tweeted.

"I want a merit based system of immigration and people who will help take our country to the next level".

Trump has said he favors stopping the diversity lottery, a system that reserves visas for people from countries that have relatively few immigrants in the United States.

Multiple groups in Congress are working on their own solutions for immigration as they race to pass a spending bill before the government runs out of funding Friday.

On Thursday, reports surfaced that Trump referred to Haiti and African nations as "s--hole countries" in a meeting that day with lawmakers.

Meanwhile this weekend, debate raged over what Trump said in the Thursday meeting - and whether he had said it at all.

Trump denied making those comments.

The "shithole countries" remark has vexed Republicans, compelling many to make statements criticizing Trump for the remarks.

President Trump is seen here speaking at an immigration with a bipartisan group of lawmakers Tuesday, January 9, 2018. Trump's staunchest supporters consider any route to citizenship for the "Dreamers" amnesty for lawbreakers.

Trump, who met on Wednesday with the Norwegian prime minister, said the United States instead should bring in more immigrants from countries like that highly developed Scandinavian nation.

In a Sep. 5 memo from then-acting DHS secretary Elaine Duke, the agency said it lacked authority to implement DACA because it was an executive order from the executive branch.

Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah, the first black female Republican in Congress and the daughter of Haitian immigrants, denounced Trump's comments as racist and called on him to apologize.

"I heard that account before the account even went public", he said on "This Week".

But in a tweet storm Friday, Trump characterized the "so-called bipartisan DACA deal" as "a step backwards".

"I'm telling you, he did not use that word", he said on ABC's "This Week" program.

Ben Marter, a spokesman for Durbin, tweeted a rebuke early Sunday: "Credibility is something that's built by being consistently honest over time", he said. Trump later declared "the language used by me at the DACA meeting [Thursday] was tough, but this was not the language used".

Democrats are demanding protections for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients in exchange for border security funding that could include money for Trump's promised border wall.

The president sought to shift from the defensive by portraying Democrats as not truly interested in an immigration deal.

Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., defended the agreement as a "principled compromise" on NBC's "Meet the Press" and said, "I hope people will explore it".
