Dog Nearly Dies of Burns After Being Colored Purple With Hair Dye

A USA animal group is warning pet owners about the dangers of using human hair dye on pets after a dog suffered life-threatening injuries from being dyed purple, reports Newsweek.

The Pinellas County Animal Services said the Maltese mix named Violet was brought in to be treated last October because of her injuries. When she arrived at the rescue, her eyes were swollen shut, she was limp, listless, and clearly in severe pain. Once they started to clean and shave her, skin began to slough off.

Writing on their Facebook page the rescuers said: "Express yourself, but please do not use hair dye intended for humans to expres your pet's style".

"Once a handsome little white Maltese mix, Violet was dyed a purple color (her namesake)... only the purple parts weren't like the pictures you usually see", the shelter wrote on Facebook.

"It was so much worse than we initially thought - but would this little dog make it through?!?!" they wrote.

To the staff's horror, Violet's skin started to peel off due to the chemical burns from the dye.

But while she had lived another day, Violet still had a long road to recovery.

People can be idiots when it comes to their pets. Would her hair ever grow back?

After three months of pain medication, antibiotics, IV fluids, honey treatments, scab removal, anesthetizing, bandage changes and tireless work by animal services employees, Violet is recovering.

"When the final badges came off we breathed a collective sigh of relief - Violet was handsome".

And her new owner, David Anderson, a dog groomer with Woofgang Bakery and Grooming in St. Petersburg, said he was grateful to Animal Services staff for going above and beyond in treating her. Its owner wanted to dye her as a nod to her name Violet.

One 2013 study by Tufts University detailed the case of one eight-year-old Border Collie who had ingested natural hair dye - henna - and developed a life-threatening case of anemia. Shes still undergoing some skin treatments, but her skin is nearly completely healed, he said. "Shes a very sweet little girl".
