Chicago O'Hare airport travelers may have been exposed to measles

Passengers traveling at O'Hare Airport on January 10 may have been exposed to the measles, according to officials.

The Illinois Department of Public Health is warning anyone who traveled through O'Hare International Airport on Wednesday that they might have been exposed to measles.

The passenger in question landed in Terminal 5 (the global terminal) then transferred to a domestic flight in Terminal 1. The Department of Health has confirmed a passenger tested positive for the disease and was in multiple terminals of the airport on that day.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has contacted the people who sat next to the infected passenger on the flight.

The agency added that the "majority of people who get the measles were unvaccinated". Anyone who was at the airport during these times is at risk of infection.

According to the CDC's statistics, one out of every 20 children infected with rubeola virus develop pneumonia, which happens to also be the most common cause of pediatric deaths from measles.

Officials say measles symptoms could come on as late as January 31 for anyone infected. Symptoms include a rash that starts on the face and neck, a high fever, runny nose, cough and red, watery eyes.

If you were in the airport, you may have been exposed to measles.

If you develop symptoms of measles, the New Jersey Department of Health recommends that you call a health care provider before going to a medical office or emergency room.

If you have the MMR vaccine, you should be protected.

For more information about the disease, go to the Illinois Department of Health's website.
