Panthers' Thomas Davis suspended two games for illegal hit

Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis has been suspended for two games Monday for an illegal, helmet-to-helmet hit on Green Bay receiver and former Fresno State star Davante Adams, according to published reports. Davis is expected to appeal the suspension. "Game is already risky enough and we got Pro Bowl players out here head hunting and saying they 'didn't mean to harm me, '" Adams tweeted.

There is a precedent that may work in Davis' favor on appeal.

Davis slammed into Adams after Panthers safety Colin Jones intercepted an Aaron Rodgers pass Sunday. NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan issued the suspension. Panthers coach Ron Rivera said earlier Monday, however, that he did not think Davis meant to hit Adams in the head.

"Definitely not", Wilks said. The emphasis right there was when you get an interception, you're really trying to set the wall.

That didn't prevent Adams from speaking out on Twitter, however. Davis wrote. "In no way was I trying to hurt you". One thing is for sure though - he won't be available for the game against Tampa Bay this coming Sunday. The Panthers could still get into the playoffs with two losses, but a win or two would cement a playoff spot and possibly keep them in the mix for a first-round bye.
