Monterey County resident dies from flu

With confirmed flu cases continuing to climb in Greene County, our local healthcare community has opted to implement visitor restrictions to hospital facilities in the area.

On Thursday, North Carolina's Department of Health and Human Services reported the first death of a child from the flu. The fifth patient was an 81-year-old resident of Irving. Both hospitals advise anyone with flu-like symptoms not to visit hospitals.

"A flu shot can still be effective", Arnold said.

Health experts advise people who have not gotten the vaccine to go ahead and do so.

FLU SYMPTOMS: fever, cough, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose, headache, muscle aches, and extreme fatigue.

The CDC has also discovered that this year's strain of flu is "only somewhat covered by the vaccine that was given this year", Radke said.

"This increased rate of flu activity is concerning because influenza can be a serious disease for anyone, including children, pregnant women, and previously healthy young adults", said Dr. Burnestine Taylor, Medical Officer for Disease Control and Prevention for the Alabama Department of Public Health.

In light of panic over reports of the vaccine's effectiveness, the CDC reported that it expects the American vaccine to be 32 percent effective against the H3N2 virus, but this week saw the flu become highly active in 21 states. "It takes approximately two weeks for your body to build immunity once you've received the vaccination".

"Everybody, who I've seen, who've had flu, majority have not had the flu shot", DeMoss told ABC affiliate KABC-TV. Those who were vaccinated and still get the flu are "less likely to have the complications of pneumonia, having to be hospitalized and dying", said Schaffner.

The CDC says the best way to protect yourself from the flu is by getting a flu vaccine, protecting yourself from the flu virus by washing your hands, avoiding those who are sick and staying home for at least 24 hours if you have symptoms of the flu.
