Jurors Find Kate Steinle's Alleged Killer Not Guilty of Murder

A jury on Thursday found Jose Ines Garcia Zarate not guilty of homicide charges in the July 2015 death of Kate Steinle in San Francisco. He was found guilty on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

President Trump later signed an executive order to cut funding from cities that limit cooperation with US immigration authorities, a policy that a federal judge in San Francisco permanently blocked Monday. Proceedings lasted about one month.

Jose Ines Garcia Zarate had been deported five times and was wanted for a sixth deportation when Kate Steinle was fatally shot in the back in 2015.

President Donald Trump said during the presidential campaign that Steinle's death was another reason the United States needed to build a wall on its southern border and tighten its immigration policies. But Garcia Zarate's defense attorney contended the shooting was accidental.

In her closing argument, Deputy District Attorney Diana Garcia said the suspect found the gun somewhere and deliberately fired at Steinle in "his own secret version of Russian roulette".

But he told jurors that Garcia Zarate had no motivation to kill Steinle and as terrible as her death was, "nothing you do is going to fix that".

The Bureau of Land Management previously said that the gun belonged to one of its enforcement rangers and was stolen from a federal agent's auto.

Steinle's father, James Steinle, who was with her when she was shot, took the stand for the prosecution back in late October, and in emotional testimony, described not understanding what had happened to his daughter initially.

"While the State of California sought a murder charge for the man who caused Ms. Steinle's death-a man who would not have been on the streets of San Francisco if the city simply honored an ICE detainer-the people ultimately convicted him of felon in possession of a firearm".

Steinle's death put San Francisco and its "sanctuary city" policy in the spotlight, as Democrats and Republicans lashed out at city officials for refusing to cooperate with federal deportation efforts.

Zarate was accused of finding a stolen gun on using it to shoot the 32-year-old woman while she was walking with her father in 2015.

Under a sanctuary city law, the San Francisco sheriff's department had released Garcia Zarate from jail despite a federal immigration request to detain him for deportation.

"Donald Trump talks about Kate Steinle like he knows her". The administration has appealed. Instead of deporting him, federal authorities sent him to San Francisco on a 20-year-old drug warrant for a small amount of marijuana. "It's disconcerting", Brad Steinle told CNN's Anderson Cooper.

"Her death was preventable - and it should have been prevented", Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in July.
