Jerusalem to Name Train Station After Trump

Israel's transportation minister is planning to name a train station in Jerusalem after President Donald Trump as a gesture for recognizing the holy city as the capital of Israel.

Yisrael Katz's plan, now in the initial stages, involves constructing two underground stations and excavating over 3km of tunnel beneath downtown Jerusalem and under the politically sensitive Old City.

Israeli daily Yedioth Aharonot reported Wednesday that there will be an additional station along the way, in the Western part of Jerusalem, and that the train will feature a VIP auto to transport visiting dignitaries directly from the airport to the Western Wall.

In May, Trump became the first sitting USA president to visit the Western Wall when he visited the site during a tour of several Middle East countries. Explaining that the Guatemalans would not make the move before the US did, Israel's ambassador to Guatemala said on Tuesday that it could take years, while US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson previously called three years "ambitious".

"There has been no recent discussion, whether among relevant government agencies, or bilaterally with Israel or with any other country, on the location of the Philippine Embassy in Israel", DFA said in a statement.

The proposed stop would be near the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City, right in the middle of East Jerusalem, which the Palestinians envisage as their future capital.

In a post on his official Facebook account Sunday, Morales said that after talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he chose to instruct Guatemala's foreign ministry to move the embassy.

Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on December 6 led to nearly unanimous support from across the Israeli political spectrum but sparked waves of protests across the world.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution last week rejecting the U.S.'s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, with several traditional American allies voting in favor of the motion.

Trump Station will be built in the city's Jewish Quarter. The train will extend from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Israel occupied the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War.
