Israel deports two Turks detained in Jerusalem

"Long live the friendship between Guatemala and Israel", he added in Spanish.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu praising the decision said, "God bless you my friend, President Morales!"

"Dear people of Guatemala, today I spoke with the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu".

No other country has their embassy for Israel in Jerusalem, though the Czech Republic has said it is considering such a move.

Israel is in contact with "at least 10 countries" who have expressed their intentions to move their embassies from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely said on Monday, in the wake of US President Trump's widely-contested December 6 decision. "One of the most relevant issues was the return of the Embassy of Guatemala to Jerusalem", Morales wrote on Facebook. Some held signs that read "All we want for Christmas is Jerusalem and Justice" and "Hey Donald!"

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales announced his decision, but he fell short of setting a timetable for the same. 128 countries including India had voted in favour of the controversial move.

Several mainly Latin American countries had diplomatic missions in Jerusalem until a 1980 UN Security Council resolution condemning Israel's attempt to alter the "character and status" of the city, saying it was a barrier to peace.

Thirty-five nations, including Australia, abstained and 21 stayed away from the vote.

Guatemala and Israel were joined by Honduras, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Togo in voting with the United States and opposing the measure.

While deriding the "preposterous" vote, Netanyahu expressed appreciation of the "fact that a growing number of countries refuse to participate in this theater of the absurd".

"It's a shameful and illegal act that goes totally against the wishes of church leaders in Jerusalem" and of a non-binding U.N. General Assembly resolution condemning the USA recognition, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, the French press agency, AFP, reported.
