United Nations council fails to push Saudi coalition over Yemen blockade

Sweden called for a meeting on the crisis a week ago after the military coalition shut down Yemen's sea and air ports as well as borders in response to a missile attack by the Huthi rebels near Riyadh.

Iran denies arming the Houthis and blames the two-and-a-half-year conflict in Yemen on Riyadh.

Sen. Chris Murphy, a Democrat from CT, took to the floor of the U.S. Senate Monday to draw attention to the "humanitarian nightmare" unfolding in Yemen - in part due to U.S. military assistance of the Saudi-led coalition laying seige to the country.

On Thursday, the leaders of the World Health Organization, the United Nations children's agency and the World Food Program issued a joint appeal for the easing of the blockade.

The coalition said Monday that it would reopen ports in areas held by allied forces and loosen restrictions it had raised after the firing of the missile, which was intercepted near Riyadh's worldwide airport.

On Monday, Saudi Arabia's state-run media agency celebrated its delivery of food baskets to needy families and, as The Guardian reports, announced it would allow shipments of aid through several ports held by the Yemeni government.

The organisation has said a blockade by the Saudi-led coalition fighting Iran-backed Houthi rebels will nearly certainly make things worse.

Like the capital, Sanaa, Hodeida and Salif are in rebel-held territory.

The former United Nations peace envoy tackled the Tory administration over its continued support for the oil-rich kingdom, which has been accused of presiding over a humanitarian catastrophe in the war-torn country. "Without them, untold thousands of innocent victims, among them many children, will die". With vaccines and medicine blocked from entry, at least one million children are now at risk of contracting the disease. It says over 50,000 children are believed to have died in 2017. The war is being waged between the internationally recognized government of President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and the Houthi movement backed by army units loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

In another development, Daesh claimed responsibility for a vehicle bombing that security sources said killed 10 people, including civilians, at a security post in the government bastion of Aden on Tuesday.

"To deprive this many from the basic means of survival is an unconscionable act and a violation of humanitarian principles and law", the agency directors warned.
