So long, 140. Hello, 280: Twitter doubles character count on tweets

Having only been rolled out to a privileged few when the initial experiment was launched in September, Twitter has now chose to let (nearly) all users avail of an extended 280 character limit in tweets, double the original character limit.

Timrasett along with another user going by name HackneyYT broke Twitter's character limit with a message that begins "People!"

Twitter has rolled out its new 280 character limit worldwide, in a full global expansion of the feature, which first debuted to a limited group of beta testers back in September.

In addition to more Tweeting, people who had more room to Tweet received more engagement (Likes, Retweets, @mentions), got more followers, and spent more time on Twitter.

Only five percent of Tweets sent were longer than 140 characters and only two percent were over 190 characters.

In previous years, reports surfaced that Twitter was exploring increasing the character limit for tweets - reports Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey quashed by calling the 140-character limit "a lovely constraint". The result is that users spend too much time trying to edit their tweets down, or abandon them altogether.

This afternoon, the official Twitter management account excitedly stated they are "expanding the character limit!" The change was made to give people more space to express themselves in certain languages where the company felt the 140 restriction was limiting.

Not everyone was using the extra space: Only 5 percent of tweets were longer than 140 characters and just 2 percent went over 190.

'It was a temporary effect and didn't last long.

Twitter is officially doubling its character limit from 140 to 280, with the change set to roll out globally in the next few days. We expect to see some of this novelty effect spike again with this week's launch and expect it to resume to normal behaviour soon after'.

"Our goal was to make that possible while ensuring we keep the speed and brevity that makes Twitter, Twitter".

Most languages will now have twice as many characters to say what they want on Twitter.
