Rafale deal: Nirmala Sitharaman slams Congress, calls allegations 'shameful'

The final agreement for 36 Rafale jets was signed in 2016 after five rounds of discussions between Indian and French sides and approval by the Cabinet Committee on Security, she said. "And, it does not require permission from the government if two private firms come together, which is a matter of their own commercial prudence", she said. We have negotiated for 36 French fighter aircraft Rafale (at a price) lower than that in the contract.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, Sitharaman had said that the deal was finalised by following a 'transparent procedure.' She had asserted that the urgent requirement of the Indian Air Force was the reason why the deal was sealed. It was not financially prudent to negotiate ToT for just 36 fighters, she said.

She said it was only Prime Minister Narendra Modi who boldly chose to sign the deal to buy 36 Rafale fighter jets.

The Congress had raised several questions on the deal, accusing the government of compromising national interest and security while promoting "crony capitalism" and causing a loss to the public exchequer. Sitharaman alleged that inaction by the previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government resulted in a delay in the deal.

She also asked the Minister to take concrete steps on the subject ahead of the State government's proposal to conduct the Global Investors Meet scheduled in September 2018.

Sitharaman said the defence procurement procedure allows a contract with a friendly government, and rubbished allegations that government was favouring any businessman through the deal.

Chennai: Those aspiring to make equipment for the defence forces must be futuristic, said Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. "What about the loot?", he tweeted tagging a report on the Rafale deal.

He said the deal was "properly revisited" at the government-to-government level and many additional facilities and opportunities had been added in terms of weapons, training of Indian pilots, and supply of spares.
