New Details on Rand Paul Assault: Sneak Attack, Possible Political Dispute

Police who were called to Paul's home shortly after 3 p.m. local time on Friday say they arrested Paul's neighbor, 59-year-old Rene Boucher, and charged him with fourth-degree assault.

The charge of fourth-degree assault is a Class A misdemeanor and he could face up to a year in prison.

He may not return to the Senate for months.

Rene Boucher, the neighbor charged with attacking Sen.

"This type of injury is caused by high velocity severe force". Paul's Communications director made this statement when he was assaulted at his Warren County.

In a statement Sunday, Paul's chief of staff, Doug Stafford, spoke of the altercation and explained that Paul's injuries included five fractured ribs, three of which are partly or completely cracked.

It isn't clear when Paul will return to work since he is in considerable pain and is having difficulty getting around.

"We're thinking about him and hoping he'll recover quickly and be able to come back to the Senate very soon", McConnell said while in Kentucky. Boucher is seen here in a photo from the Warren County Regional Jail.

The attack was a shock for the community in Bowling Green, where a neighbor says he would often see Paul and Boucher out walking their dogs on the normally quiet streets.

Boucher, a doctor, was released on a $7500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday, the NYT reported.

Paul and Boucher also had a previous disagreement about a property line involving a creek behind the lawmaker's house where Paul's sons would sometimes play, the source added.

He also had cuts to his nose and mouth and trouble breathing because of his rib injuries, according to NBC News.

An automated phone system at the jail did not provide access to lawyer information for Boucher.

Boucher is a Bowling Green anesthesiologist and pain specialist who developed a product called Therm-a-Vest, a cloth vest partially filled with rice and secured by Velcro straps that is created to relieve back pain by delivering heat directly to the areas of the back where most pain is felt.
