Nadal beats Chung to guarantee ending the year as No. 1

Nadal beats Chung to guarantee ending the year as No. 1

Rafael Nadal will end the 2017 season as the world No 1 after beating South Korea's Chung Hyeon in the second round of the Paris Masters on Wednesday.

"I'm very, very happy for everything", Nadal told Sky Sports.

The path toward the year-end top ranking was set for Nadal when Roger Federer withdrew from action at the 2017 Paris Masters.

It marks the conclusion of what has been a remarkable season of renaissance for Nadal, who overcame wrist problems from a year ago to win the French Open and US Open - his 15th and 16th grand slam titles.

"It's something that means a lot to me, but the season is not over". It has been an wonderful year.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion did not have it all his own way in a see-sawing first set in which he and Chung exchanged two breaks apiece before Nadal broke to love in the final game. I'm very happy, but the season is not over. After conceding an early break, he looked to have turned things around when he led 5-2 in the opening set only for Chung to level up.

The 29-year-old was 47th in the points standings before the US Open in August, but an excellent run of form during which he reached the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows and won the Stockholm Open title has dragged him back into contention.

The No 1 will next face Pablo Cuevas in the last 16, after the unseeded Uruguayan edged out Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-1) 6-2.

In remaining first-round play, Britain's Kyle Edmund rallied from a set and 3-0 down and saved match point before beating Evgeny Donskoy of Russian Federation 5-7, 7-6 (7), 6-3.

Also, fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev lost to Robin Haase 3-6 6-2 6-2, and ninth seed John Isner beat Diego Schwartzman 7-6 (7-2) 6-7 (13-11) 6-3.

Home hope Lucas Pouille kept his slim hopes of qualifying for the World Tour Finals alive by seeing off Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4.

The 31-year-old Nadal will be the oldest year-end number one and first season-ending number one over the age of 30 since the Emirates ATP Rankings were established in 1973.
