Manafort indictment has 'nothing to do with us,' says White House's Sanders

Manafort indictment has 'nothing to do with us,' says White House's Sanders

The White House spent Monday insisting that everything was calm after Special Counsel Robert Mueller's indictment of President Trump's campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his top aide, Rick Gates, plus the newly announced guilty plea of a Trump campaign adviser, George Papadopoulos.

"He was a volunteer member of an advisory council that met one time", Sanders told reporters Monday afternoon during the White House press briefing.

Sanders said there is "no intention or plan" by the president to fire or remove Mueller from the investigation.

Investigators probing Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential elections have indicted Manafort and Gates on 12 counts including conspiracy against the United States, failing to declare themselves as foreign agents while working for the Ukrainian government, concealing foreign income to avoid paying taxes and making false statements.

"Is the administration aware of who the other three or four campaign individuals who were referenced in that Papadopoulos plea were, and are any serving him or advising him in the administration?" the reporter asked.

George Papadopoulos, a foreign-policy advisor to the Trump Campaign, has also pleaded guilty to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his contacts with a professor connected with the Russian government officials.

Mr. Papadopoulos's offers were repeatedly rebuffed by the campaign, although one official told him to go to Russian Federation in order to gather dirt about Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Papadopoulos sent a "High-Ranking Campaign Official" an email titled "New message from Russia" back in June 2016, in which he said the Russian ministry of foreign affairs wanted to meet with either Trump or a campaign official in an off-the-record capacity, according to the prosecutors' statement.

She also criticized Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Democratic National Committee for their contributions which funded research for a dossier alleging Mr. Trump's connections to Russian Federation.

"We believe that it will be concluded soon", she said.
