Katy Perry 'rejected for Chinese visa' ahead of Victoria's Secret show

Gigi Hadid walks the runway during the 2016 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show on November 30, 2016 in Paris, France.

Because of this tension, Perry's 2015 outfit, which she topped off with Taiwanese flag tied around her neck, could have been interpreted as a further anti-China statement. However, models Julia Belyakova, Kate Grigorieva and Irina Sharipova have reportedly been denied entry into China because of "offensive" social media posts.

Back in 2015, Perry wore a sparkly sunflower-print costume for her concert in Taipei and that pissed off the Chinese government because, little did Katy know, the sunflower was a symbol adopted by anti-China protesters in Taiwan the year before. Last year, Lady Gaga was banned from visiting China because she met with the Dalai Lama, and other celebs like Harrison Ford, Richard Gere and Maroon 5 have also been denied access.

According to Page Six, an insider disclosed that Perry - who was slated to perform and booked well in advance - had attempted to apply for a Chinese visa but was denied.

China views Taiwan as a breakaway state and refuses to recognize it as an independent country. "Love my VS family, and will be with all my girls in spirit!" she wrote on Thursday.

Victoria's Secret veteran Adriana Lima's visa has allegedly been held up due to an ongoing "diplomatic problem". Though the model gave no explanation for her withdrawal, sources said she was also banned from entering the country over a controversial video from February where she appeared to mock Asians.

Bustle has reached out to Victoria's Secret for confirmation and comment, as well as reps for Perry and Hadid.

Malik, 24, and Gigi Hadid began dating in 2015 after he attended that year's Victoria's Secret fashion show in NY.

The star's reported ban from China follows a similar punishment which was handed out to Gigi Hadid by Chinese authorities.

Question. why the HELL did Victoria's Secret execs pick China to host their internationally-famous fashion show?

Victoria's Secret has a dark history of being accused of cultural appropriation in its annual fashion show.
