He's gone: UCLA fires Jim Mora after third straight loss to USC

On Sunday, the day after a rivalry loss to USC, UCLA announced that it has relieved head football coach Jim Mora of his duties near the end of his sixth season.

"Making a coaching change is never easy", UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero said in a statement, "but it's an especially hard decision when you know that a coach has given his all to our university".

After leading UCLA to 8 wins or more in his first 4 seasons, including 10-win campaigns in 2013 and 2014, Jim Mora and his Bruins have been mired in mediocrity. "We thank Jim and his family for his service to our school and his unquestionable commitment to our student-athletes". Jedd Fisch, who had been serving as the team's offensive coordinator, will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

UCLA has also announced that former National Football League quarterback Troy Aikman will be assisting in the school's upcoming search.

The UCLA Bruins slipped to 5-6 and lost to the USC Trojans, their main rival, once again.

The terms of Mora's contract will be honored by UCLA Athletics, exclusively using department-generated funds.

Mora went 46-30 in his first significant collegiate coaching job, but the Bruins are on the brink of their second consecutive losing season despite a roster filled with elite recruits led by quarterback Josh Rosen.

The Gators and Bruins could both be vying for former OR head coach Chip Kelly.

The Bruins are third-worst among the Power Five conference with 37.6 points allowed per game, and second-worst in the FBS with 288.7 yards rushing allowed per game.

UCLA coach Jim Mora looks on as his Bruin team is defeated by USC on November 18, 2017 at the Coliseum. UCLA could land a bowl game with a victory over Cal on Friday.
