Facebook: Send Us Nudes So We Can Fight Revenge Porn

Facebook is asking some of its users to send them their nude pictures. Once the image is sent, Facebook will "hash" it, creating a digital fingerprint which is used to prevent the image from being uploaded in the future.

Users concerned about intimate images of themselves ending up on Facebook are being invited to send the photos to themselves using Facebook's Messenger app.

According to Australia's eSafety office, one in five Australians has faced image-based abuse, where an intimate photo has been posted to social media without their consent.

Revenge porn in becoming an increasing problem but Facebook are doing all they can to stamp it out.

"The deployment of this technology would not prevent someone from sharing images outside of the Facebook ecosystem, so we should be encourage all online platforms to participate in this program, as we do with PhotoDNA", he said.

Having proven itself capable of taking out Russian agents, Facebook is now rolling out a plan it promises will stop revenge porn.

The pilot scheme, which is now being rolled out on a trail basis, will see users complete an online form on the e-safety commissioner's website. Users are being asked to upload nude photos of themselves to Messenger.

This nude photo inoculation program is now being tested in Australia, with the support and blessing of Australian e-Safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant. The answer is-revenge porn.

"Yes, they're not storing a copy, but the image is still being transmitted and processed".

It's an idea that sounds like utter madness, but Facebook is at pains to convince users that it's actually a brilliant solution. They're storing the link and using artificial intelligence and other photo-matching technologies.

It's not clear if the US will get the same technology being tested in Australia.

The user then reports the image and Facebook uses a cryptographic signature to identify that image, meaning that no else can upload it. "Some information is more valuable for hackers, and hashed photos could be one of them".

My hope and expectation is that Facebook will automate the process as much as possible, but that there may need to be some human involvement to review submitted images. If the same photo is uploaded then it will thwart the same and prevent it from distribution.
