Can Sex Trigger Fatal Cardiac Arrest? Study Finds Risk Is 'Extremely Low'

For many men the idea of dying during or shortly after sex is considered among the best ways to go, but new research suggests it is actually quite rare.

Cardiac patients anxious about the risks of sex to their health can feel comfortable being intimate: the chances of a heart attack from sexual activity are extremely small, according to the results of a new study.

"People will ask their doctors if sex increases their risk of sudden death, and we've never had the answer before because there never was a study", senior study author Dr. Sumeet Chugh, said a statement from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

In an analysis of 4,557 adult cases of cardiac arrest in a Northwestern US community between 2002 and 2015, only 34 of them occurred during or within an hour of sexual intercourse.

Overall, sudden cardiac arrest during sex accounted for less than one percent of cases in the general population, yet these differed by gender, race and other risk factors.

Researched cite this as the reason that less than 20 per cent of patients who have a heart attack during sex survive. Of those, 32 were in men.

Men are more likely than women to have their heart stop as a result of sex.

This varies from a heart assault, where blood stream to the heart is blocked. The researchers and their teams talk to the patient who gets a heart attack and also from the relatives of some who's closed one gets died due to cardiac arrest.

94% of heart attacks during sex happen to men, according to the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

The study is scheduled to be presented Sunday at the American Heart Association's annual meeting in Anaheim, Calif. Though almost 90 percent of those suffering cardiac arrest out of a hospital die, CPR can double or triple a person's chance of surviving, according the American Heart Association.

Though all patients included in the study had their sudden cardiac arrest witnessed by another person, less than a third received CPR.

About 19 percent of the patients in sex-related cardiac arrest cases survived their ordeal, compared with an average survival rate of around 10 percent nationwide, he said.

Dr Chugh said: "These findings highlight the importance of continued efforts to educate the public on the importance of bystander CPR for sudden cardiac arrest, irrespective of the circumstance".
