Butch Jones Out As Tennessee's Football Coach

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee has fired coach Butch Jones with two games left in a regular season in which the Volunteers started ranked but are now still winless in the Southeastern Conference.

After initial reports on Sunday broke the news of the latest coaching change in college football, Tennessee Athletics Director John Currie has now confirmed it through a statement.

Butch Jones apparently isn't too interested in keeping the recruiting class he assembled in place at Tennessee.

This comes one day after the Vols were blown out 50-17 at Missouri and the Vols' fifth loss in their last six games. The Vols are 4-6 this season, 0-6 in the conference and they close the season with two home games against LSU and Vanderbilt.

'For that reason, I have asked Coach Jones to step down'. I know Coach Jones will be successful moving forward, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

Jones' five-year record was 35-26 overall and 14-24 in the SEC.

Tennessee (4-6, 0-6) managed just 285 total yards. The Vols also have never lost eight games in a season.

But Jones couldn't push his program up to the higher level that Vols fans expected.

Defensive line coach Brady Hoke, the former University of MI head coach, will serve as UT's interim head coach for the last two games.

As bad as the season has gone, UT still has a slim chance at bowl eligibility; it must win both its remaining games. Hoke has a career coaching record of 78-70 between three jobs with Ball State, San Diego State and MI. Hoke was serving as the defensive line coach at Tennessee and was the head coach at MI before Jim Harbaugh. The Vols haven't won a SEC title since 1998, which was also the year Tennessee won the national championship under coach Philip Fulmer.
